September 17, 2014 |Posted By - Kiran Patil

Your phone is an important way of staying in touch with the world and keeping your independence. But sometimes, receiving unwanted, repeat or sales calls can cause problems. If your evening quiet time or dinner was interrupted by a call from a telemarketer, then you’re not alone.

Here are some tips on how you can deal with unwanted phone calls.

There is a vast variety of unwanted telephone calls

1) Unwanted sales or marketing calls:

A large number of unwanted calls/texts are calls from telemarketing.

In your caller ID, you may know that a telemarketer is calling you. You can of course choose to put the phone down, but if you are not so busy, then allow them to say their whole initial speech. Avoid of using bad words, as the telemarketer is only doing his job. If you are not interested then simply say that “You are not interested in your services or product" and immediately hang up. If you don’t want calls from them in future then ask them to remove you from their calling list.

The most effective and easiest way to prevent telemarketing calls is to register your home and personal phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry.

2) Calls made to you by mistake i.e. Wrong number:

Usually wrong numbers are not hateful. Some wrong number calls are made by people by mistakenly dial a phone number. Now mobile operator sells the numbers which are not in use from last 6 months, in this case if you dial your contact then you find that this number is in another person’s hand.

If you receive these calls, simply says that “I’m not the person with whom you want to talk and this is wrong number”. But never give your name and address or any personal information to them.

3) Annoyance calls:

Annoyance calls are made from person with the intention of causing annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety. They can be upsetting and distressing – but there are ways you can deal with them. If you are receiving such calls, then try to find the name and location of the person. For this you can install apps like TrueCaller also use call blocker to block this number.

4) Spam Text:

A spam text message includes marketing of a particular product or service or claims that you won 0000000$ lottery and ask your personal details. It is against the law for companies to send you spam texts unless you have previously given them permission.

If the text message is from an unknown sender, then never reply. Even some times they try to trick you by saying "text 'STOP' to be removed from the mailing list". IGNORE THIS!

Unfortunately there is no official way to stop these spam messages. But you can do the followings-

If you are Android user, then a new mobile app “India Against Spam” is available on Google Play store for free of cost download. It allows users to register for DND directly, report spam text messages and calls to TRAI in a single click.
