What is GPS ?
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigation and precise-positioning tool. Developed by the Department of Defense in 1973, GPS was originally designed to assist soldiers and military vehicles, planes, and ships in accurately determining their locations world-wide. Today, the uses of GPS have extended to include both the commercial and scientific worlds.
How GPS works ?
Three distinct parts make up the Global Positioning System. These are the space segment (SS), a control segment (CS), and a user segment (US).
The space segment (SS) is composed of the orbiting GPS satellites, This segment consists of 32 satellites As of December 2012, orbiting 20,000 km above the Earth in 12-hour circular orbits. This means that it takes each satellite 12 hours to make a complete circle around the Earth means twice a day. They transmit signal information to earth.
The second part of the GPS system is control segment in which consists of a global network of ground facilities that track the GPS satellites, monitor their transmissions, perform analyses, and send commands and data to the data center.
The user segment consists of the GPs receiver equipment, which receives the signals from the GPS satellites and uses the transmitted information to calculate the user’s three-dimensional position and time.
The first handsets with integrated GPS launched in the late 1990s. Today, GPS tracking is used in business and home life.
Do you Have GPS on your Mobile Phone?
The GPS (Global Positioning Technology) units embedded in modern cell phones uses satellites in Geosynchronous Orbit to provide precise locations. Cell phone GPS can be used to locate someone if you have the right information.
For android users there are following useful GPS application –
1) GPS Tracking Pro :
GPS Tracking Pro keeps your family and friends safe by tracking their real-time location using any Android phone. With the best in GPS technology, this app tracks the exact location of your family members and alerts you when they are in trouble, using the app's innovative check-in feature.
Track your family using GPS
The app allows family members to locate each other on our mobile map. Parents today are busier than ever so you can use our mobile app to track your child whether you're at home, work, or on the road
2) GPS TEST :
The GPS Test app for Android is a utility that shows GPS information read from your phones internal GPS. Will support GLONASS phones. The app has several colour schemes, which could be used to match other instrumentation, used along side the app. It has a "night mode" colour scheme as well.
GPS Test has five screens full of information: -
1) GPS signal (SNR) bar chart, showing the signal strength for each satellite, as well as the accuracy and status of the GPS.
2) Satellite positions in the sky (skyview), shown on a rotating compass.
3) Your current location on the earth shown as text and on a world map. The current position of the sun and the day/night transition curve is also shown.
4) Your current speed, heading and altitude shown as text.
5) The current time read from the GPS and the local time in your current timezone, as well as the sunrise and sunset times at your location.
3) GPS Speedometer :
GPS Speedometer a highly customizable, auto scalable speedometer with large analogue view, designed for daily use with perfect visual graphics.
a perfect companion whenever you need to know your speed information, direction and altitude, Gps Speedometer Pro can be used efficiently for driving, hiking, cycling, walking etc...
You can keep record of your track or route and create valid GPX files and share with your friends.
2) Smart Compass:
Smart Compass is in the 3rd set of the Smart Tools collection. This compass is a tool to search bearings(azimuth) using the built-in magnetic sensors. It has 3 significant features.
1. Although you may turn the phone into portrait or landscape mode, the heading is fixed.
2. The Camera's view is used for reality.
3. Metal Detector(magnetic field) is included to verify the sensors.
