When you can no longer log in to your account or when your friend shouts on you about sending mails about Viagra, weight-loss supplements or some such nonsense topics and links, then it is the first sign that your account is hacked and It can be a real nightmare situation. Another indication is that when you login, you get noticed that your inbox is empty and all your contacts have been deleted.
Now the question is what to do in this nightmare situation?
Here is a list of steps and procedures that you need to follow in order to initiate the password recovery process:
1. Try to reset your password
Once you realize that your email accounts have been hacked, the next step is immediately changing your password.
In this process, some website asks you secret questions or may sends reset password link to your alternate email address or given mobile number. Unfortunately if hacker changed the secret question and the secondary email address, then in this case you need to contact the support team by filling out the account recovery form.
2. Change your password
Fortunately if you are able to login by following these steps, then immediately change your password and security questions. If you have several other accounts associated with this account or has same username or password, then check them out one by one and change their password.
The hacker may attempt to change your password on other sites, using access to your email to perform password resets. So if you are using Facebook or other account with this email address, then also reset their password.
3. Check your computer’s security
Most hackers collect passwords using malware that has been installed on your computer. Clean your pc with good antivirus and anti malware program.
4. Check for spam mails
Check that if spam mails have been sent through your email id.
5. Alert family and friends
If spam mails have been sent, then alert everyone on your contact list that that your email is hacked.
6. Protect yourself for the future
You can’t avoid the risk of having your email account or other services hacked, but you can do some things to prevent it.
- Avoid checking your email on an unsafe network.
- Do not use same username and password on many accounts, it will increase your risk.
- Long password is not always better; make it strong using numbers, special characters, upper case and lowercase.
- Do not use your real name, mobile number in password.
- If you receive a suspicious email, don't click on any links or download any files.
